I tested the drive using a 2.6 series kernel. The kernel must support USB Mass Storage devices and have SCSI Disk support enabled. If your kernel has the required support, the drive will be automagically recognized as /dev/sda1 when you plug it in. You can repartition it using "parted /dev/sda" if you want.
