What is Ghosting?
By Timothy Tibbetts |
Ghosting is a term that hasn't been around all that long compared to other colloquialisms. Here's more than you ever wanted to know about Ghosting.
The origins of the term Ghosting dates back to the early 2000s. The term is a colloquialism (or casual communication) that means to cease all communications with someone, often without warning or explanation. Any attempts to reach out are ignored.

The terms became more popular as social media, texting, and especially dating apps became widespread, with a huge spike in popularity in 2015 when celebrities used the term to make it more popular. It's widely believed that the popularity of the term ghosting really took off when Charlize Theron broke up with Sean Penn by ghosting him.
Since ghosting became popular, we must have spinoffs. Many of the spinoffs tend to be dating-related but are worth knowing about when using dating apps and or ghosting as part of your vocabulary.
Caspering is letting someone down in a friendly way before you cease all communications (ghosting).
Ghostbusting is a way to try and force the person to respond. Incessant testing would be one example.
Marelying is when an ex reaches out to you at Christmas.
Cloaking is when someone stands you up for a date, then ends all communications and blocks you on dating apps.
Had enough? I apologize in advance then.
Shaveducking is when a woman thinks she's attracted to someone because of their beard. Wow.
Sidebarring is when someone checks their phone constantly during a date.
Submarining is ghosting someone then responding suddenly weeks later.
Breadcrumbing is when someone is lead on with no intention of moving forward.
Had enough? Well, that covers most of the spinoffs, but there are always a few more dating terms because it's dating, and the majority of dating and dating apps are often young, tech-savvy users.
