Hands-on with Ego 56-Volt Lithium-ion Cordless Electric Blower
By Timothy Tibbetts |
Battery operated leaf blowers are slowly becoming as powerful and affordable as their gas-powered competitors. We've recently purchased the EGO Power leaf blower and spent an entire summer testing it out. Here's what we found.
The packaging is easy to remove everything, and you might want to charge the battery and skim the manual. I'll be honest; I never read the manual and have never felt the need. After all, there's no choke, fuel, oil, spark plugs, air filters, primers, or all the annoyances of a gas blower.
The battery slides in, then clicks when in place. Press down on the obvious green button to remove the battery for charging. That only leaves two things to do - squeeze the trigger and adjust the speed. You can press the lock button, so you don't need to hold the trigger down.
Weight is always a concern with many. The EGO blower weighs about 5 and a half pounds and 12 with the battery. Gas blower's weights can vary but are often between 9 and 17 pounds.
The blower has excellent power, on par with many gas blowers. For example, most gas blowers offer 150+ MPH force, whereas the EGO initially offered 110 MPH, but now has upgraded to 168 MPH. We used the blower in many situations, and while it won't blow as hard as its gas competitors, we have yet to find any position where EGO didn't have enough power. We've blown leaves, dust, dirt, grass clipping, and even blown off our car with the EGO blower.
Let's talk about price. The EGO blower can run you about $200 for the latest model and closer to $100 for one without a battery if you already own another EGO product with the battery. Most stores don't currently offer the blower without a battery, and I prefer to have a spare battery charging, especially considering the battery life is 15 minutes on High power. You may get over an hour at low speed.
If you're looking to go electric, the EGO is one of my favorite products tested. You can find blowers with more or less battery and power, but be sure to check out all the information if speed is king for you. This includes the battery size, MPH, and the often-overlooked Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM).
We found the EGO to suit all of our needs and have no regrets with our purchase. We also own the EGO brand lawnmower and weed eater. As discussed earlier, the EGO blower is available with or without a battery. As an Amazon Associate, we earn a commission if you purchase an item using our affiliate links below.
