The Best Drivers for Your Device Are Already Installed

When trying to update a driver in Device Manager, you might be told that "the best drivers for your device are already installed," but you know you need an updated driver.

Windows will install the latest drivers. Still, the time between submitting WHQL drivers to Microsft, and making them available on Windows Updates usually means your "latest" drivers are already out of date.

Your best bet is always to get the latest drivers yourself, especially if you're a gamer or power user. If you'd like to do that, here's how to take over and always have the best drivers installed.

First, we want to stop Windows update from updating drivers. While we can accomplish this by using the registry editor, Group Policy Editor is the preferred method.

Disable Driver Updates Using Group Policy Editor

Group Policy Editor is not available on Windows 10 Home. You'll need to download Add Group Policy Editor to Windows 10 Home with PowerShell.

Start Group Policy Editor by pressing the Windows Key + R and type in gpedit.msc then press Enter.

Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update

Now, scroll on the right side, find and double-click on Do not include drivers with Windows Update.

Click on Enable, Apply, then OK.

Enable allows Windows 10 to download all of the necessary Windows Updates you need minus the drivers.

Should you change your mind later, follow these steps and choose the default option, Not Configured.

Downloading the Latest Drivers

Downloading the latest drivers depends on personal preference. You can get them from your computer manufacturer, who often stops offering updates after a year when your warranty expires. You can use a third party driver updater, but occasionally they can be a little behind.

Are you wondering what we recommend? We use Driver Booster, but we update our video drivers when we see a new release to make sure we have it. That system has never failed us. Watch the following video and or check out How to Download the Latest Drivers for Windows, which also has the same video embedded.

We think reading that article and watching the video will assist you in making the best choice for you.
