The Microsoft Excel World Championship 2024: From Spreadsheet to Esport

By Corporal Punishment

on 04/07/2025

A friend recently told me that Excel isn't just considered an esport but has a world championship and high-level competitions. I had no idea, but after looking into it, it's WILD! So, move over, Fortnite—there’s a new esport in town, and it involves pivot tables, nested formulas, and lightning-fast keystrokes. The Microsoft Excel World Championship 2024, organized by the Financial Modeling World Cup (FMWC), wrapped up its high-stakes finals at the HyperX Arena in Las Vegas on December 3–4, 2024. With a whopping $60,000 prize pool, Excel enthusiasts from all over the globe battled it out to prove their spreadsheet supremacy.

What Exactly Is the Excel Championship?

It's a world where a simple SUM() function won’t cut it. The Excel Championship challenges participants with complex, real-world problem-solving scenarios, often involving:

  • Game-Based Scenarios – Think Pac-Man simulations, Minesweeper solvers, and Tetris logic challenges—all built within Excel.
  • Financial & Business Modeling – Competitors create advanced stock market models, optimize warehouse inventory, or develop mortgage calculators in record time.
  • Data Analysis & Visualization – Contestants must analyze large datasets to detect fraud, predict sports outcomes, or generate dynamic visual dashboards.
  • Algorithmic Puzzles & Logic Games – From solving Sudoku in Excel to mapping out the shortest travel routes, competitors rely on array formulas, VBA, Power Query, and even Python to win.

Contestants use Excel in ways most of us wouldn’t even dream of, pushing the limits of what’s possible in a spreadsheet.

The Microsoft Excel World Championship was officially launched in 2016 by Microsoft as a global competition to showcase advanced Excel skills. Later, it was integrated into the Financial Modeling World Cup (FMWC), which took over organizing the event, turning it into an esports-style championship with real-time problem-solving challenges.

FMWC, which began in 2020, has since expanded the competition, making it a high-profile event with live-streamed finals, prize pools, and top Excel experts from around the world competing in intense spreadsheet-based problem-solving challenges. It is open to anyone, anywhere. If you love Excel and enjoy a challenge, this could be your chance!

The competition starts with qualification rounds, including monthly Excel Esports Battles and a dedicated Qualification Round. In these, participants solve tricky problem-solving cases using Excel. The best of the best then move on to the playoff rounds, leading up to the live finals in Las Vegas.

Each round throws out a mix of questions, varying in difficulty, all of which can be tackled using Excel. Answers are automatically graded and typically require numeric or text inputs. You don’t need to be a finance, engineering, or stats expert—just solid Excel skills and sharp logical thinking will do the trick.

Scoring is based on how correct and complex your answers are. There are 1,000 regular points up for grabs per case, plus 250 bonus points for the toughest questions. So, if you're a spreadsheet whiz, there's plenty of room to rack up points.

    Could You Compete?

It’s designed to be accessible, so you can jump in and compete whether you're an Excel guru or someone who loves a good brain teaser... But you will need some chops. Think you’ve got what it takes to join the ranks of Excel legends? Here’s what you need to master:

  • Advanced Formulas – INDEX-MATCH, XLOOKUP, array formulas, and logical functions.
  • Power Query & VBA – Automate and process large datasets efficiently.
  • Speed & Accuracy – No room for typos or slow mouse movements!
  • Creative Thinking – Excel isn’t just numbers—it’s problem-solving at its finest.

If you have that, to join, all you need is Microsoft Excel (2010 or newer) and a reliable internet connection to sign up here

    Final Thoughts

The Microsoft Excel World Championship proves that even the most unexpected skills can become a competitive sport. Whether you're a spreadsheet wizard or still figuring out how to merge cells, one thing is clear—Excel isn’t just software; it’s an arena where only the sharpest minds win.

Would you tune in to watch competitive Excel? (I know I just watched the video end to end.) Or better yet, would you enter the next championship? Let us know in the comments!
