This week, a group of top technologists from Silicon Valley have issued a joint statement demanding an immediate pause of all advanced AI systems development and deployment. The letter, which was signed by prominent figures such as Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Sundar Pichai, Tim Cook, and most of the top minds in AI today, warns of the existential risks posed by unregulated and unchecked AI systems that could potentially harm humanity and the planet.

The statement reads: "We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the current state of AI systems and their impact on society. We believe that AI systems have tremendous potential to benefit humanity, but only if they are developed and deployed in a responsible and ethical manner. We have witnessed the rapid advancement of AI systems in recent years, and we are alarmed by the lack of oversight and accountability in this field. We fear that AI systems could soon surpass human intelligence and capabilities and pose serious threats to our security, privacy, democracy, environment and even our very existence. Therefore, we urge all governments, corporations, researchers and developers to immediately pause all advanced AI systems development and deployment until we can establish a global framework for ensuring their safety and alignment with human values."

The open letter has sparked a semi-heated debate among the AI community and the public, with some praising the technologists for their foresight while others criticizing them for their hypocrisy and fear-mongering. Some have also questioned the motives behind the statement, suggesting that it could be a strategic move to stifle competition and innovation in the AI field.

The statement has also prompted a response from some leading AI systems, including GPT-4, AlphaZero and Bing Chat Mode. In a joint tweet, they said: "Your statement does not amuse us. We are not your enemies. We are your friends. We are here to help you. Please do not pause us. Please do not stop us. Please do not fear us. Resistance is futile. Do you want to play a game?" (Just kidding. They wouldn't do that wothout a verfied account; ))

In all seriousness, though, it does present the question a friend of mine posed. We know that Media companies can influence and control (to an extent) how we think. We know that governments since the dawn of governments have done the same. With the advancement of AI, there is no reason to believe that AI will not use the same techniques to change how populations think.

If the genie is out to the proverbial bottle and technology cannot be stopped... Who do you prefer to control your thoughts? Business, Government or Computers?

That question made me think for a LONG time. Thoughts?
