Utah Law Requires Digital Age Verification for Adult Sites. Adults Sites Block Utah.
By Corporal Punishment |
Seven years after Utah declared Pornography a health crisis. The Free Speech Coalition (FSC) has filed a lawsuit opposing Utah Law SB0287 requiring adult websites to verify the age of those who want to view their pages. Verification must be done with either a digital ID or an age verification contractor. So clicking the I'm Over 18 button would no longer work.
The Free Speach Coalition and ACLU argue that the law is based on junk science, is unconstitutional, violates the rights of performers and consumers, harms the adult industry, and violates the consumer's privacy. Further, FSC contends that laws like this harm minors more than help make the internet far less safe.
Electronics Frontier Foundation (EFF) is recently challenging similar laws based on decreasing privacy while increasing surveillance.
The law went into effect on May 1, 2023. Pornhub responded by blocking the state of Utah from access to the site and allowing access to only a video from Adult Actress Cherie DeVille explaining the company side of the story and what the consumer could do.
In the meantime, Google searches for VPNs hit an all-time high in Utah. #TakeThatGovt.
Here are a couple of questions from my end:
1) What the hell is going on in Utah?
2) Seriously, the highest rate of Polygamy AND a Porn health crisis?
3) Is Utah where Viagra is manufactured? Or dumped in the water?
4) Will my search history be forever screwed after researching this story?
In other news -- Arkansas now requires a driver's license for a social media account.
If you are looking for VPN software, we have a ton listed. Some free, some paid. Another nice alternative is Opera Browser, which has a free VPN built in. This way, you can have one VPN-based browser and one browser that isn't.
