Grok is a neologism coined by American writer Robert A. Heinlein for his 1961 science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land. It technically means "to drink" but refers to a deep understanding of something beyond the intellectual level to a point where one feels they have merged with it.

Heinlein's definition of grok is complex and nuanced. Still, it can be summarized as a kind of empathy or intuition that allows one to see the world from another perspective and understand it profoundly. It is to understand something so well that it becomes a part of you.

For example, someone might say that they "grok the way quantum mechanics works" (they would probably be lying) or that they "grok the codebase of a large software project."

Here are some examples of how grok might be used in a sentence to impress your friends:
  • "The philosopher grokked the nature of reality."
  • "The programmer grokked the elegant simplicity of the algorithm."
  • "Gronk grokked the seam pass agianst cover two zone."
  • "Neo grokked The Matrix."

However, in 2023, the enigmatic Elon Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI and advocate for responsible AI development, adopted the term for his new Grok AI. He may grok news coverage.

Grok AI is a generative artificial intelligence chatbot developed by xAI, an artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk. It is still in beta testing, but it has already learned to perform many kinds of tasks, including writing different types of creative text formats, translating languages, and answering your questions informatively.

There is a waiting list for anyone who wants to try it out. You can sign up here: https://grok.x.ai/

Elon, as every great geek should, drew on inspiration from the supercomputer in "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" (#MarvinFTW) and designed Grok AI to be a more "rebellious" and "spicy" chatbot than other similar chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard. It is not afraid to tackle controversial topics or use profanity and often has a sarcastic or witty tone. It also includes a fn-mode to offer humorous responses.

Grok AI can also access real-time information from Twitter, which gives it a significant advantage over other chatbots that often cannot answer questions asked about current topics. This advantage means Grok can provide more up-to-date and relevant information and be more responsive to current events.

Grok AI is a promising new AI chatbot. However, it is important to note that it is still in development and is only sometimes accurate or reliable, just like every other chatbot out there. It is also essential to be aware of Grok AI's advantage of being trained on current Twitter..... er, I mean, X feeds could create potential biases, as X information is only sometimes representative of the real world.

There has yet to be any information on pricing or a long-term road map, but Grok AI looks like a fascinating and powerful new tool that will add some fun to the NET. Grok also looks like aneeded and legit competitor to ChatGPt and Bard.
