When running or starting the Windows Update Assistant, some users have reported a problem with the app restarting itself or force-installing Windows 10 while returning an error "Windows 10 Update Assistant is already running." Try these steps to fix the problem.

1: Windows 10 & 11 Update Assistant is Already Running - Reboot

Rebooting can often solve the problem by closing the app (if stuck), clearing memory, and more. Give that a try.

2: Windows 10 & 11 Update Assistant is Already Running - Stop Update Orchestrator Service

If the problem persists, let's force-stop the Update Orchestrator Service.

Press the Windows Key + R and type in services.msc and press Enter.

Scroll down and double-click on Update Orchestrator Service.

Click Stop, then click OK.

Reboot.

Click Stop.

3: Windows 10 & 11 Update Assistant is Already Running - Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

The Windows Update Troubleshooter can find any other potential problems and might even recognize the missing update mentioned above.

Begin by typing troubleshoot in search and click on Troubleshoot settings. You can also find troubleshooters in Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.

Find Windows Update on the right and click on that, then Run the troubleshooter. Follow the prompts.

4: Windows 10 & 11 Update Assistant is Already Running - Block From Running

Some tutorials suggest uninstalling the Windows 10 Update is Assistant, but that's no longer possible. What we can do is block it from running with a batch file.

Copy and paste the following text into Notepad:

@echo off

:Loop

taskkill /im Windows10UpgraderApp.exe /f

taskkill /im SetupHost.exe /f

goto Loop

Save the file with any name you like and with a .bat extension.

Right-click on the new batch file and click Run as Administrator.
