What is Windows 11 SE?
By Timothy Tibbetts |
Microsoft has announced Windows SE will be arriving in late 2021 as a competitor to Chromebook, a low-cost laptop that costs a fraction of what a Windows PC does. Here's all you need to know about Windows SE and if you should consider it.
Why Windows 11 SE?
Windows users have wished for a slim version of Windows since Windows 95. There are numerous apps to slim Windows or remove some of the bloats, but they don't go far enough. What many customers want is a simplified no-bloat version of Windows. Microsoft has made this more difficult over the years by ensuring that many features are so heavily embedded that you can't remove what you want.
If you were hoping that Windows 11 SE was the answer to your prayers, prepared to be disappointed.

What is Windows 11 SE?

Windows 11 SE is a slimmed-down, cloud-first version of Windows 11.
There are three versions of Windows 11 SE with no explanation of the differences between them; Windows 11 SE, Windows 11 Pro Education, and Windows 11 Education.
Instead of making Windows 11 SE available to everyone, Microsoft will only sell Windows 11 SE to schools and students. The idea is to simplify and limit the operating system to make it easier to use and collaborate.
The system specs are low to keep the price down and allow Windows 11 to run smoothly, much like a Chromebook. Expect to see an Intel Celeron processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 display.
Where Can You Buy Windows 11 SE?
Microsoft will sell you Windows SE for as little as $219 if you purchase 1,000 laptops. Individual pricing is currently $240-$330. There is an online contact form for more information.
Otherwise, it isn't clear where you can purchase Windows 11 SE, but we assume you must purchase it through Microsoft.
Conclusion
It took Microsoft a long time to respond to Chromebook, and if we had to guess, it could make a big dent in Chromebook sales to schools and educators. We can also safely assume it can't compete with Chromebook on speed, but that might not matter.
If you learn on a Windows 11 SE computer, you might be better prepared for the real world when you graduate, where you're more likely to use a Windows PC. You can graduate to the full version of Windows to run many productivity apps that aren't available in a Chromebook. After all, you don't see a lot of Chromebooks in commercial environments.
