HDHacker can save, visualize, and restore the MBR, the boot sector, or any specified sector from any disk, including removable disks.

This utility can be used to save and restore a particular boot manager (like LILO, for example) before a new Windows setup, which will overwrite it. An MBR and BootSector backup can be used for preventative measures since viruses or other OS setup (like Linux) do have the potential to overwrite and/or alter MBR/Boot Sectors. That fact will make it impossible to initiate the previous OS and/or access any of the data stored on the disk. All sector details can be conveniently saved to a DAT format file, copied to the clipboard, or written to a disk.
