MakeMKV allows DVD movie conversion to MKV (a.k.a. Matroska) files with zero audio or video loss (HD).
It is capable of holding an unlimited number of audio, video, and subtitle tracks, along with any associated metadata, making storing movies and all their associated data virtually limitless.
MKV (a.k.a. Matroska) will automatically detect your DVD and display all its details. Then, all you need to do is start the copy process with a single click. This multimedia tool can also use ISO files and Video_TS folders as the input source broadening the scope of its usefulness. You can also utilize the included streaming server when streaming a particular DVD directly to a compatible device.

Limitations:
The free version is limited to only DVDs - the shareware version supports Blu-Ray. But during the BETA stage, all the features listed above are available for use.
Editor's Note:
The Linux release includes full source code for MakeMKV GUI, libmakemkv multiplexer library, and libdriveio MMC drive interrogation library. Please use the forum for an up-to-date setup instructions. You need to follow the steps outlined there to compile and install the application and all libraries.
