OpenBoard is an Open Source interactive whiteboard for schools and universities in Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Why OpenBoard?
The program is designed to optimize the interactive experience when used with a tablet, stylus, and video projector. While it may not wholly replicate the tactile experience of writing on a traditional chalkboard, it comes close to providing that feeling in a digital format. Although OpenBoard also functions with a mouse, using it for drawing can be challenging; users often find that their attempts to craft letters lack aesthetic appeal when relying on mouse movements.
It's important to note that OpenBoard is not intended to duplicate the classic chalkboard experience; instead, it aims to offer the functionality of a modern whiteboard. Users have the option to change the background color to black to mimic some aspects of traditional education tools. Still, currently, no feature allows for a green background, which is often preferred for its calming effects and readability.
Functionality
In terms of functionality, OpenBoard enables users to write on the board with a digital pen and enhance their presentations by highlighting important elements with a virtual marker. The erasing feature is quite flexible, allowing individuals to remove specific parts without leaving any smudges or to clear the entire board with just a single click. The program also boasts zoom capabilities, letting users focus on particular areas or details and making it easy to move or manipulate individual elements on the board. Additionally, users can type directly onto the board, draw straight lines with precision, and utilize a laser pointer feature to direct attention during presentations.
While the color palette is somewhat limited and options for adjusting brush thickness are not extensive, the program maintains that a high level of customization may not be necessary for effective teaching and presentation. OpenBoard presents a polished and visually appealing interface, is entirely free to use, and, when paired with the right devices, has the potential to transform any space into a functional classroom environment.
