RestartExplorer can do a 'graceful' restart of the Explorer shell (File Explorer, Windows Explorer) in Windows.

RestartExplorer will try to save all of your preferences before restarting so you don't lose anything. Once run, it only takes 5-10 seconds to restart Explorer. There's no GUI here, so there's nothing to show in a screenshot. Just double click it and wait.

The first time we ran it, we lost our taskbar, but running it a second time restored it. Of course, I wasn't having an Explorer problem, so testing an app to fix a problem you don't have can cause problems.

Restart Explorer might just help you with that random Explorer crash, however, odds are there's an underlying problem if it continues to happen. We did a tutorial and video some time ago how to fix this problem: Fixing Windows Explorer Crashes in Windows.
