A 22 year old, Zachary Shames, is facing 10 years in prison for being the creator of a now-defunct keylogger known as Limitless Logger that infected an estimated 16,000 victims.
Shames has pleaded guilty to the charges of developing and selling the malware. He developed and sold the malware while still in high school. He continued while in college and marketed the malware for $35 on the infamous Hack Forums.
According to the court documents, Shames sold the malware to 3,000 hackers who in turn infected thousands of victims. He started selling the malware in March of 2013 and oversaw its transformation into a powerful malware program that had the added ability to upload stolen data to a FTP server, and the ability to dump data and passwords from numerous programs.
His keylogger, one of many such programs, targeted numerous Fortune 500 companies. A report by Trend Micro in November of 2014 pointed the finger at Shames which drew the attention of the FBI.
As Shames' career as a successful software engineer took off, he gave up developing the malware. However, the FBI caught up with him and now the young man is facing years in prison. His sentencing will take place in June of 2017.
