5.5 Million Social Security Numbers Stolen

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 07/24/2017 09:45 AM [ comments Comments ]

If you live in any of these states; Kansas, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Delaware, Idaho, Maine, Oklahoma, Vermont, and Illinois, and have been looking for a job and posting resumes, your Social Security number may have been stolen.

A hacker breached the Kansas Department of Commerce data system, which also keeps data from 10 states, and stole more than 5.5 million Social Security numbers along with 805,000 more accounts that did not have S.S. numbers attached.

The Department of Commerce will be required to pay for credit monitoring.

The data that was collected came from websites that help people find jobs. When the attack occurred, the Department was handling data from 16 states, but fortunately, not all states were affected.

An IT company that specializes in forensic evaluations was called in, verified the coding error and fixed the issue. They are also tasked with identifying the victims.

If you feel you may have been one of the victims, there is a call center that can answer questions. It can be reached at 844-469-3939 until the end of July.
