Apple pulls iOS update 8.0.1 due to fatal issues (Updated)

Posted by: Jon Ben-Mayor on 09/25/2014 03:46 AM [ comments Comments ]

Serious issues have been reported with the latest iOS update version 8.0.1, Apple has gone as far as pulling the update back due to it causing complete loss of cellular signal, data service and Touch ID capability. The reported problems seem to have only affected the 6 and 6 Plus.

Restarting an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus does not fix cellular functionality, nor does attempting to use "Reset Network Settings," but some users have reported that restoring iOS 8.0.1 via iTunes or doing the initial install from iTunes fixes the cellular connection issues.

Apple support has also recommended restoring iOS 8.0.1 via iTunes to fix the problem, as noted on Twitter and the MacRumors forums.

An Apple spokesperson provided TechCrunch with the following statement:

“We have received reports of an issue with the iOS 8.0.1 update. We are actively investigating these reports and will provide information as quickly as we can. In the meantime we have pulled back the iOS 8.0.1 update.”

TechCrunch goes on to say, restoring your iPhone via iTunes using an iOS 8.0 firmware file appears to be a fix for now. The easiest solution appears to be downloading the iOS 8 image for either the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus direct from Apple, then plugging your phone in, holding the Option key, and clicking Update on your phone’s info screen in iTunes. Select the IPSW file you just downloaded, and it should roll it back to iOS 8 without removing any of your apps, messages or settings, as we’ve verified with our own hardware. An Apple Store should be able to perform this fix for you if you don’t have access to your computer.

No word on when Apple will issue a new update to fix this less than stellar one. But for now the iTunes band-aid will help.

Update**Apple has posted instructions for a fix:

Follow these steps to reinstall iOS 8.0.

Make sure that you're using the latest version of iTunes.

- Connect your iPhone to iTunes.

- Back up your iPhone in iTunes on your Mac or PC. iCloud backups won't restore to earlier versions, including iOS 8.0.

- Download the file below that corresponds to your device:
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus

- Select the file you just downloaded by doing one of these in iTunes:
Mac: Press the Option key and click Check for Update.
Windows: Press the Shift key and click Check for Update.

- Press Update to install iOS 8 on your iPhone.
The Health app won't work in iOS 8 after these steps. It will be fixed in our upcoming iOS 8.0.2 software update.
