Bio Implants Gain Acceptance

Are bio implants the thing of the future? Have you thought about being able to gain entry to your office, get on a bus, or perhaps buy a sandwich with just a wave of the hand?

Felicio de Costa, who rents office space at Epicenter, a new hi-tech office block in Sweden, arrives at the front door and holds his hand against it to gain entry.

He is able to access the main building and his office as well as the photocopy machine all because he has an RFID (radio-frequency identification) chip, about the size of a grain of rice, implanted in his hand. The other 700 people who occupy the building will be offered the same choice in the near future.

Along with access to doors and photocopiers, they're promised further services in the longer run, including the ability to pay in the cafe with a touch of a hand.

Kaspersky labs is also in the running for implants. The implants can carry a great deal of personal data, from e-wallets to passport and driver license information and can even open connected door locks.

All sorts of things are possible - whether it becomes culturally acceptable to insert technology beneath our skin is another matter.
