California woman rescued by her Find My Phone app

A California woman is lucky to be alive thanks to her iPhone.

The woman drove her car into a 500-foot ravine and thanks to her family and one clever police officer was located via her Find My Phone app on her iPhone.

The unnamed woman veered off Mount Hamilton Road and wound up spending 18 hours at the bottom of the ravine before being airlifted out by a Coast Guard helicopter.

In spite of being equipped with Genera Motors OnStar system, the company was unable to pinpoint where the car was.

Campbell police officer Dave Cameron, who suggested using the app, was also credited with guessing the woman's password on the third or fourth try to unlock the app.

Unlike OnStar, when location tracking and location-based apps are enabled on an iPhone, the device and Apple's tracking system attempt to maintain an ongoing connection to pinpoint the location of the smartphone.
