Cracked.com responds to recent hacking - all clear

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on 11/16/2013 04:56 AM [ comments Comments ]

Cracked.com has been taking some heat, not just for being hacked, but for not making their readers aware immediately when malware was discovered on Cracked.com.

On their forums a site administrator poorly claimed the problem was fixed:

"It seems as though the site being compromised and serving malware has been a reoccurring problem with cracked.com. Each with somewhat lax approach “Yeah we stopped getting complaints about it and Google took us off the malware warning list or whatever was triggering it. Is anybody else getting it again?”

We spotted nothing when browsing the website about the issue but further digging found this on their Facebook page:

"Hey, everyone! You know what’s exhausting? Dealing with some jerk who won’t stop trying to sabotage your operation when all you’re trying to do is bring information and laughter to the nice people of the Internet.

So here’s the scoop on the latest hubbub:

"Our security team was able to identify the breach and we have implemented measures to address the problem. We continue to actively monitor the situation. Please contact support@cracked.com if you have any information or questions.""

Don't get me wrong, this happens. Popular sites and vulnerabilities are targeted but I really feel this was handled about as poorly as could be using a 'stick your head in the sand' approach and hope no one notices. Sometimes, being open and honest and addressing an issue like this is the best policy.

We wish cracked.com all the best in the future and to answer the question if the site is safe, the answer is yes. We already went there today.

This isn't the first website you visit to be hacked and it won't be the last.

On our original article, we gave you the tools to check your computer so here they are again:

IObit Malware Fighter 2.2.0.16
