Some cybercriminal with some big stones managed to hack into the Pinal County Attorney's Office in Arizona and implant ransomware on one of their systems.
According to County Attorney Lando Voyles, the CryptoLocker ransomware has encrypted 64,000 files. The files are on one system that is for FOIA requests for the public.
Voyles has stated that it should only take a week to restore the encrypted files from backups. And since he has no evidence to press charges, Voyles has not yet involved law enforcement.
CryptoLocker is spread primarily by spear phishing campaigns. It usually requires a victim to click on an attachment in an email to run the locker program. Voyles did not state what the ransom amount was nor how long he has before the ransom increases.
Voyles has stated he has no intention of paying the ransom.
