Dayton Ohio Planning Commission Attacked with Ransomware

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 08/08/2015 09:36 AM [ comments Comments ]

The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) reported that it had fallen victim to a ransomware attack.

The commission did not pay the ransom and was able to restore about 15,000 files with its backup system in about 30 minutes.

The ransom demanded 500 Bitcoins or about $1,400. The hacker did not say whether it would post the files online. It is not clear as to whether or not the files were stolen.

As always, it seems that the cause of the ransomware was probably a malicious email, but the commission is not sure of the exact cause.

It is also not clear if this was a targeted attack.
