Police in Long Beach, NY., responded in force to a reported multiple victim murder; the 911 call was made through Skype and was quickly found to be a hoax, which authorities believe was initiated due to a loss online during a Call of Duty game.
Now the FBI has joined the investigation into the hoax call, which according to police could cost taxpayers up to $100,000. The call reported that the 17 year old resident of the home had murdered his several family members inside.
According to CBSNews, more than 60 heavily armed officers, accompanied by helicopter support, went to the home Tuesday after police received a call that someone killed his mother and brother there.
Police said the caller may have been playing the online video game "Call of Duty" against a 17-year-old at the house. Long Beach Police Commissioner Michael Tangney said the call may have been part of a phenomenon known as "Swatting," in which gamers get more points depending on the level of police response to their hoax. This would be a solid rating of "10"...
Law enforcement are continuing their search for the unknown suspect and Tangney says that they "do not know who the fictitious caller is, but we do have names of the people that our victim was playing with."
