FBI to roll out malware tracking system

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 03/02/2014 03:35 PM [ comments Comments ]

FBI Director James Comey said last week that the FBI plans on rolling out a method for victims of malware attacks to report those attacks and upload malware samples.

During his keynote address, Comey said: “Later this year we’ll roll out Malware Investigator.”

Although he didn't go into much detail, he did state that he idea behind it is to treat malware and viruses much like “fingerprints and DNA” that would let the FBI identify crime suspects.

Comey's predecessor told him that his job would be increasingly focused on cybercrime issues, such as tracking dangerous botnets, cybercrime syndicates and carrying out computer forensics. Comey agreed with that assessment.
