Gozi Virus Co-author Pleads Guilty in Federal Court

The BBC reports that one of the creators of the Gozi trojan has admitted guilt in court and is awaiting sentencing.

The Gozi trojan has been around since 2007 and was a genuine threat to bankers and people who do banking.

Calovskis was responsible for at least some of the Gozi code, according to a statement put out by the FBI in 2013. With his admission of guilt, Calovskis took responsibility for code injections which misled people into thinking that they were on official banking sites.

FBI assistant director in charge George Venizelos said: "This long-term investigation uncovered an alleged international cybercrime ring whose far-reaching schemes infected at least one million computers worldwide and 40,000 in the US, and resulted in the theft or loss of tens of millions of dollars. Banking trojans are to cyber criminals what safe-cracking or acetylene torches are to traditional bank burglars, but far more effective and less detectable. The investigation put an end to the Gozi virus."

Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 14th where he could face up to 67 years in prison.
