How to back up your Android and iPhone contacts

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on 09/27/2014 01:50 AM [ comments Comments ]

I don’t know about you but I have years of contacts built up and changing from Android to iPhone or vice versa can make transferring contacts difficult. While most cell phone stores can transfer your data, why take the chance, especially if your sim card gets damaged? I am not the first person who could not get their data transferred at a cell phone store.

Luckily for you backing up your contacts from Android or iPhone is as easy as having a Gmail account.

Backing up Android contacts

1: Go to settings.
2: Find backup and reset.
3: Make sure that back up my data is checked. Your contacts will be updated as needs on Gmail now.
Note: Some phones including some older Samsung Galaxy phones require you to go to “Contacts, Menu, Merge with Google” or in some cases Contacts, Settings, Merge Account, Google” but you get the general idea.

Backing up Android contacts without Gmail

1: Open up your contact list.
2: Hit the menu button.
3: Choose "import/export" and select where to back it up. I was able to choose export to USB storage and a save the contact list in .vcf format on my computer’s hard drive. You can also email it, save to thumb drive, etc.

Backing up iPhone contacts

Simply log on your Gmail account which you can do the first time you activate your new phone if you have already backed up to Google. Otherwise:

1: "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"
2: "Add Account, Gmail". Login with your Gmail username and password.

Once you're done be sure to go back to "Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Gmail" and you want to check what to sync (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Notes).

Of course this leaves me to address the one problem some will complain about - privacy. Even if you don’t upload your contacts to Google, your ISP has access if required by law enforcement. Also, remember that your phone tracks most of what you do and where you go even if you try to disable it from doing so. Hence, if you think uploading your contacts to Google is a huge security or privacy issue, I am running a special on tin foil hats.
