Microsoft sees a slow decline in dominance

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 03/15/2014 04:14 PM [ comments Comments ]

According to NetMarketShare and StatCounter, Windows' market share has fallen below 90% for the first time since the debacle that was Windows 95. But it still dominates.

The most recent market share report from NetMarketShare indicates that all versions of windows combined (laptop and desktop) have a 89.96 per cent share. StatCounter put it slightly lower at 89.22 per cent share.

Still trailing long behind, NetMarketShare places Apple' OS X at 8.16 per cent; StatCounter says that OS X has an 8.34 market share.

StatCounter stats show the market share of all systems.

On top of its OS branch, Microsoft, the company, however, is more than holding its own in other areas: ie. server software, online services and gaming, and even its business (Office) offerings.

Its biggest challenge will be its future in the vastly expanding mobile device market.
