Phishing Scam Nets Hacker 1,000 W-2's

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 03/01/2017 10:33 AM [ comments Comments ]

Another employee falls for a W-2 phishing scam.

This time the scammers stole all the W-2 information from the Redmond (Ore.) school district which contained employee's name, social security number, mailing address, wages, and tax withholding information.

As usual, an employee received an email from who he thought was the district Superintendent Mike McIntosh. As usual, he did not check the authenticity of the email and sent the information to a hacker. It is still early, but the district said that no information has been used for nefarious purposes.

Law enforcement was notified and the district has contacted those affected with the advice they file their tax returns as soon as possible.

The district offered this apology: β€œThe Redmond School District experienced a data breach resulting in the release of all district employee W-2 information to an unauthorized third party. We apologize for this unfortunate incident and are taking immediate steps to safeguard your personal information and support you in protecting yourself from identity theft."
