Anybody who has visited MajorGeeks, especially those going way back to the TweakFiles days will remember Really Slick Screensavers. If not, let me update you quickly. Really Slick had one of the coolest OpenGL screensavers on the internet back in the day. They were available before toolbars, malware and bundled software existed and they still hold up today. Many of the old screensavers from this era have disappeared from the internet but Really Slick still has a dozen of these screensavers available for download on MajorGeeks.
So if you were wondering why MajorGeeks is reviewing a game of all things, it’s because we go way back with our boy at Really Slick and he offered me a preview copy so why not?
So, here we are in 2014 and Really Slick has decided to try their hand at an old school shooter called Retrobooster. According to Really Slick:
Retrobooster is a high-tension survival shooter with an extremely nimble thrust ship, aggressive enemies, speed flying challenges, puzzles, creepy worlds, and fiery death lurking pretty much everywhere.
We call it Asteroids and Lunar Lander on steroids and we weren’t even trying to rhyme!
Game allows you to choose your difficulty level as well as add players so you can connect controllers for multiplayer mode. It includes a Cooperative Mode, something PC gamers seem to always clamor for.
From here you get a basic storyline but there’s no secret or hiding that this actually just an old school shooter with some pretty nice graphics. You use your thrust to avoid the walls and shots being fired at you while trying to blow up the enemy. You simply use your left mouse button to go forward, right mouse button to go in reverse and F to fire. Sounds pretty simple, right?
Wrong. It will take you a bit to get used to controlling the rocket and when you do, it gets pretty intense. This isn’t Asteroids with a limited number of boulders. There’s a lot going on here. Really Slick promises about 20 hours of gameplay.
A lot of thought and effort went into this “simple” shooter. If you are looking to reminisce about old games like Descent, Lunar Lander and Asteroids then Retrobooster might just be the fix you need.
Game launches on February 21st and will cost $17.99. If you purchase before the 21st then you can buy it for $12.00 using PayPal and Amazon.
