Review: Spigen Magnetic Air Vent Mount

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on 04/30/2017 07:51 AM [ comments Comments ]

Now that my smartphone is my GPS, I found using my cupholder was destroying my charging cable so it was time to take the plunge and get a mount for my car. I spotted the Spigen Magnetic Air Vent Mount with great reviews and only $7.99.

Out of the box, it takes a minute to grasp how to set it up, but once I stopped and looked again at step 1, it became clear. There is a larger, rectangle magnet and a smaller, round magnet and matching protective film. The rectangular magnet is for larger phones and vice versa.

Take your smartphone cover off, remove the backing from the magnet and affix it to the case. Then remove the backing from the protective film and affix that over the magnet to protect your phone. Put the cover back on, and you've completed the magnet installation. It's so thin; you'll never know the magnet is there.

Now simply pick one of your vents and stick the magnetic air vent mount wherever you want it. The design that goes into the vent is cylinder-like with an X in the pattern so it should work on any car vent.

This is where it gets interesting. It almost seems like it shouldn't work. The phone, when you first attach it, does not seem like a strong bond. Naturally, this means I had to go for a ride and hit as many bumps and make a lot of fast turns to find out. It never moved; not even a little. You can even use the phone, especially the smaller ones.

With the magnetic connection, you might assume that the magnetic air vent mount would come loose when removing your phone from the pressure. Nope, not even once. One downside is the 90-degree temperatures currently in Florida. Not having that air flow was missed, but my phone was cool :)

I picked up two of these and my wife, and I love it. It works as advertised and I can finally use my GPS without looking down. I also used to put the phone in my cup holder, and that's destroyed my charging cable. At $7.99, it's worth the cost just to save my next charging cable, which Apple can charge 25 bucks or more just for a 3-foot cable.

Interested? Here's the link to Amazon where you also support MajorGeeks if you buy anything while there.
