RIP Ian Murdock: Founder of Debian Linux

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 12/31/2015 05:37 AM [ comments Comments ]

Ian Murdock, the founder the Debian Linux operating system and the creator of apt-get, has passed away. He was just 42.

Murdock was working as a member of the technical staff on the Docker website where the announcement first was posted.

The cause of death is unclear at present although Murdock posted a tweet that said he would commit suicide that night. There is some speculation that his twitter account was hacked.

Murdock posted some Tweets on Monday suggesting he had been involved in a police case and has been beaten by the police and charged with battery. The San Francisco Police Department has not commented on Murdocks death.

Murdock developed Debian in August 1993. He also worked as the CTO of the Linux Foundation.
