Satana Ransomware in Development

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 07/06/2016 05:48 AM [ comments Comments ]

The hackers are working on a new piece of ransomware called Satana that has the ability to lock the MBR.

The malware is not finished yet, but it will lock your systems MBR until a ransom is paid. Researchers are saying that the malware has low-level flaws. It appears to be a work in progress but you can expect it to be released soon.

This is the second piece of malware that attacks the MBR. The MBR code is what tells the computer how to start.

After your system is infected, you will get a notice to pay a ransom of 0.5 bitcoin (approximately US$340). And unless you are relatively tech savvy, it could be hard to resurrect the system.

Since the computer cannot start, payment of any ransom has to be done on a different clean computer. But as always with ransomware, even paying the ransom does not assure that you can regain access to your device.
