Satirical posts to be flagged by Facebook

Facebook will now be flagging specific news posts in order to help people distinguish between real news and satire.

It is amazing that this needs to even be done at all, but I guess Facebook feels we need tending.

According to a Facebook spokesperson, "We are running a small test which shows the text '[Satire]' in front of links to satirical articles in the related articles unit in News Feed."

Stories from sites like the Onion or the Daily Mash will be tagged so people won’t be fooled when they read headlines like, “Majority Of UFO Abductions Committed By Alien That Person Knows” or “Government adding cocaine to tap water.”

The Onion of course popped out a story titled 'Area Facebook User Incredibly Stupid' and in typical Onion fashion pokes fun at the fact that we need easy stuff so we don't get confused. And differentiating between obviously absurd news and the real thing, according to Facebook, is very difficult and requires a tag

So does this amount to Facebook thinking we are stupid? ;) Probably.
