Should You be Paranoid Enough to Cover Your Webcam

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 09/16/2016 05:57 AM [ comments Comments ]

You may remember that earlier this year there was a photo of Mark Zuckerberg's desk which showed his laptop with a piece of tape over his webcam.

There were responses that accused the Facebook creator of being paranoid. Others thought it was a good security practice.

Now the FBI director, James Comey, is suggesting that the latter is his best recommendation.

β€œThere's some sensible things you should be doing, and that's one of them,” Comey said during a conference at the Center for Strategic and International Studies while defending his use of a piece of tape to cover his personal laptop's webcam.

He went on to tell that if you went into any of the FBI's offices, you would find a lid over all the webcams that sit atop personnels computers.

He made the analogy that covering webcams is just like locking the doors when you went to bed at night.

Eset made a report that cybercriminals are increasingly targeting both webcams and routers. Researchers are also recommending that tape should cover the cams and router passwords should be set from defaults.
