Solar powered Android - Meet Earl

Meet Earl - When you find yourself out in the great outdoors you do not need to leave your tablet at home. Coined the Backcountry Survival Tablet, it has the capability of solar charging which is a big plus when camping or hiking.

Earl aims to make the outdoors 'tablet accessible' by providing features such as glove friendly infrared touchscreen with 3D joypad and gyroscope which makes it easy to use in multiple situations. The unit also comes with a 1024x768 6" flexible E-ink screen designed by LG, and if you happen to get caught in the rain while you are out of the safety of the basement it has waterproof shell. The solar charging is done through a laminated solar panel that will give you about 20 hours of battery (3000mAh). The charge time is close to 5 hours in direct sunlight.

Android 4.1 runs the device, and it has 1GB ram, 16GB memory + microSd, and comes preloaded with 100k resolution topo base maps covering the United States, Canada and Mexico, and if that isn't enough to keep you from getting lost - it has a walkie talkie feature that will work with other Earl equipped nature lovers, and a AM/FM/SW/LW radio to keep you company if you are alone.

The developers told the Android Community that it works with thousands of apps, and they’ll have an open API developers can tap into to take advantage of the many sensors on board, like the weather sensor for example.

Up until June 9th, Earl will cost about $249.
