Time Warner Cable still not convinced users want faster internet speeds

Posted by: Jon Ben-Mayor on 02/12/2014 09:29 AM [ comments Comments ]

This would seem to be a no-brainer; who in their right mind would not want a faster internet connection at a reasonable price? Time Warner seems to think that their users have no such need and apparently are quite content providing slow service at high prices. They claim that they need to strike a balance on internet speeds.

Time Warner CEO Robert D. Marcus at one point stated "that none of his customers want 1 Gbps service." Funny thing about that statement...it is flawed to the core.

A spokesperson from Time Warner told WDRB, "Not everybody needs that type of capacity that a direct fiber network would provide, and that is what we are trying to balance out."

The statement came after the city of Louisville, KY., made a general request for information (RFI) about gigabit service; 9 companies responded with an interest in providing gigabit service - Time Warner was not one of them.

Time Warner Cable's standard (and most popular - due in part to the price) service tier offers downloads of 15 megabits per second. The connection comes to homes through coaxial cable.

“The fact that Time Warner Cable has a city blatantly begging for faster speeds and yet they still seem to believe that they can continue offering expensive and slow Internet speeds is quite telling,” according to DSLReports, "It tells the story of how, much like other major ISP’s across the country, Time Warner Cable is a bit shell-shocked when it is forced to fight against actual, realistic competition."
