Walmart and Best Buy will not use Apple Pay

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on 09/15/2014 04:42 AM [ comments Comments ]

Both Best Buy and Walmart have decided not to use Apple Pay mainly due to the cost.

Apple Pay uses a near field communication (NFC) to connect with the latest iPhone to allow the user to make purchases from the device instead of using a card.

Each individual unit would cost around $500 to purchase plus installation and maintenance.

Of course, like everything else in technology there are too many ways to do this sort of thing and they all do it differently. Once NFC technology works like a credit card where you can scan whatever device you have, then it will become affordable hopefully.

For example, tossing out loose numbers not to be taken literally; Apple is in the 50% market share neighborhood. So this means 50% of their customers won’t have it. Then you want to consider how many of the Apple users will use it. That’s a lot of money for people who probably have cash, credit or debit on them and using the Apple Pay system is most likely not a deal breaker for them.

Time will tell.

The good news is that you can still get a Big Mac at McDonald's with your Apple Pay. Enjoy!
