MajorGeeks has always been a niche website but after 15+ years of this niche, we now have a ton of files and a really lousy, single category system, so the time has come to add sub-categories. We have made a lot of changes, and a lot of mistakes over the years but this is the largest project we have ever taken on. Discounting a few days off here and there we expect this to take about a month.
This page exists so that you (and everyone who contributes here) can see what we are up to and leave feedback if you like.
Please note that this sort of editing (could require editing over 8,000 pages) will mean there will be mistakes. We are moving files, pages and deleting a lot of old shareware and freeware that simply does not apply and no one should download.
If you find any mistakes please help us by emailing tim@majorgeeks.com
Thanks for your support over the years! Here we go....
March 27th:
I guess you could say that’s a wrap for the hardest project I have ever taken on in MajorGeeks 14 year history.
With sub-categories now complete, I still have to thin out some prior standalone categories that have been moved as new sub-categories, for example Registry. We need to remove older, abandoned and obsolete programs in these. Again there’s a lot of programs that are older or shareware and no longer relevant. While we hate to lose traffic and Google Rankings, we also decided it is better to remove these programs and steer people to better programs.
I expect to spend the next month thinning out the remaining categories and adding new programs. I hope you enjoy the new sub-categories, the new PC Games section and a more accurate, almost error free website. Almost, because that’s an impossible, never ending goal....
You geeks are the best, thanks for the support. Here's a before and after comparison:

March 23rd:
Networking slimmed down. From here I need to clean up some categories that went to System; Registry for example. Otherwise, the actual sub-categories are now officially DONE! Total time: About 5 weeks of some really long days
Couple more weeks as I slowly trim a few remaining categories.
Over the weekend I modified Games to PC Games. Basically we are not a gaming website but we ARE gamers so I thought why not keep the top 110th of 1 percent of the best of the best? Sure, you can go download tons of crappy games anywhere or you can come here and get the best. That’s MajorGeeks explained in a nutshell. I checked numerous file download sites and found that most of their games, especially the new stuff, is just listed for the sake of listing it. Ugh.
I am having a crappy morning with word that Gwar frontman Dave Brockie was found dead but I am getting to work slowly on the Networking category. Networking, like Covert Ops has geek behind it. Those categories represent how small, simple and niche MajorGeeks was originally going to be so they will never be sub0categories themselves, even though it would be easy to do. Networking is large, but not huge so I am going to go through it to see if sub-categories are even needed here. Assuming some will be deleted and others moved, I doubt I will need to.
March 22nd:
I got issues. So after deciding the Microsoft category would survive, I woke up this morning and decided it wouldn’t. Basically there’s some old files in there no one should need or are no longer supported so there’s some easy deleting. Finally, the rest of the files literally can now be spread out where you can find them easier in the many new sub-categories. Will tackle this on and off over the weekend but when you see Microsoft gone from the menu, you will know it’s done.
March 21st:
Security…. After struggling with it, I realized that again, this category makes no sense. Most of it was file encryption and password managers and with the exception of a few files almost everything else has a new home elsewhere now like Covert Ops, Browsers & Drive Utilities. Security was a kickass category back in the day but now security isn’t a niche category anymore, it’s on everyone’s mind and part of most programs. So, Security has spawned, for example:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/file_encryption.html
Finishing this up today sometime. Update: Done. A lot of files went to Drives - File Encryption and Drives - File & Folder Lock. Next up deciding what to do with the Registry Section. Registry cleaning is popular and accomplishes nothing so going to think about this one. It will either get a couple categories or cleaned up and moved to System.
Update: After deleting about a dozen obsolete and shareware registry tools that no longer exists, the category is simply not that large actually. Hence, it fits perfectly under System Tools with other tools. Next up? I don't know, I think it's take the weekend off mode. Yeah, right.
March 19th:
Since I suspect people click on Video nowadays when looking for video tools or players, the Video category is now gone as a standalone. When we started that category almost 15 years ago it was mostly for video card tweakers and fixes that were common back in the Windows 9x, ME, Vista and even XP days. Of course, now all that can be done with your video drivers and software so essentially the original video category is mostly nostalgia.
The other tools in Video were programs to test and repair LCD monitors. Back in the day, dead pixels were the norm and companies even set a number of dead pixels that made it available for return under warranty. As you know now, dead pixels are not as common or noticeable so that ship has also sailed. There are still some really cool monitor programs so these have survived under System/Monitor & Screens with other utilities that fall in there.
I was going to rename Video to Graphic Card Tools when I moved it to System Tools, but since so few people need anything in there, naming it Video Card Tools leaves it at the bottom of the category list, where it is not real noticeable but the geek can still easily find it and the average guy won't be pointed in the wrong direction.
I deleted about a dozen totally useless to anyone files as well.
Next up: Security. Not sure how this one will end. About half of the files will be moved to new categories elsewhere and about 10% will be deleted. I am thinking Security as a category will survive, but not sure it's needed anymore with all the sub-categories.
March 18th:
Wow, multimedia is DONE! That was one HUGE category and took some time. Next up I will be going through some other categories that need to be broken down including Video, Registry, Security, etc. I still see a couple more weeks of work but the progress at this point is HUGE and worthy of using caps
Just realized this has been a month long project already as well. Obviously the website still has to be run so I am happy with the progress and hope you like it so far. Thanks, as always, for your support.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/multimedia.html
March 16th:
Day 3 of partial days in the Multimedia Category continues. I hope to finish this Monday after a few more hours today. Check it out!
March 14th:
Triple update:
1: When I started this project, I started in BIOS. It was an easy category to do and a good warm-up. People don’t tinker with their BIOS like we did back in the day so Bios has been deleted as a stand-alone category and moved into drivers as BIOS CMOS.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/bios_cmos.html
<<<<---------- Menu looks a lot neater already don't you think?
2: Another category that is no longer needed now is Misc, or Miscellaneous. These files now all deserve new homes in a sub-category somewhere. Will be finished today and that might be it for the weekend. Update: Done.
3: I stuck my toe into the Multimedia pool. What a huge category! I already moved most of the Codec packs into a Codec sub-category and expect this category to go 2-3 days being the weekend and all.
Now, for some behind the scenes information; The Miscellaneous category is called Misc not because it wouldn’t fit but because Jim is such a bad speller that I was afraid he would repeatedly spell it wrong and break links. Guess that problem will soon be solved.
Now, I am not perfect myself; not even close. I have been locked out of much of the backend for many years. I had a reputation for testing things out live and often breaking the website and Jim locked me out. Probably a good idea
March 13th:
Toys has been deleted as a category. It was small and most of what was there were programs like Google Earth, Earth Alerts, etc. and can now be found as a sub-category of internet at:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/satellite_imagery.html
As promised, Admin as a main category is dead. Most of the files there went all over the place, with quite a few into Networking, which will be split into sub-categories later. About 10% were deleted as obsolete. We would rather delete files you don’t need to look at and steer you to what you need.
Earlier today:
Getting difficult now. Admin tools is really just a lot of networking and password tools and a catch-all for “we don’t know where to put it” over the years. Hence everything in Admin is now being moved to a better category and deleted as a standalone category. A new category was created – System – and holds a lot of things like Benchmarking, Diagnostics, Memory, Power Management, Processor, System Info and more. Makes sense to me. Hope it does for you. Less categories should equal making things easier to find.
After this, I will tackle the huge multimedia category.
March 12th:
And 2 days it is:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/internet_tools.html
March 11th:
After a few days off to rest the eyes, I am back at it. There are still 3 very large categories to tackle and one of them got larger because we merged other categories into its subcategories and that would be internet tools. This will take 2-3 days I suspect. See you when it’s done.
March 7th:
Sadly one of our least popular downloads on MajorGeeks is not a file, but an entire category; Backup. So, this has been split into 3 simple sections. Cloud Backup, Local Backup and Drive Cloning & Imaging.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/back_up.html
March 6th:
Office is DONE! Took almost 3 days. There’s a ton of categories but most people are looking for text editors, office suites or pdf tools so the categories should make life easier regardless of what you’re searching for:
Calculators
Calenders, Reminders & Notes
Clipboard Tools
Dictionaries, Thesaurus & Spell Check
Electronic Books
Finances
Fonts
Microsoft Office Alternatives
PDF Tools
Printing Tools
Text Editors
Web Development
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/office_tools.html
March 4th:
Oops, apparently if you sit at your desk for 12 or so hours, you can get another category done. The big thing here was to split off the popular browsers (Firefox, IE and Chrome) as well as popular downloads like Flash, Shockwave and Java and of course, everything else.
Adobe Shockwave & Player
Google Chrome
Internet Explorer
Java
Mozilla Firefox
Other Browsers
Other Utilities & Tools
Toolbars
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/browsers.html
Next up, Office Tools. I already started sub-categories and a few files.
March 3rd:
Graphics is done! This is pretty awesome because there were so many files so creating categories to simplify your search was actually pretty simple to decide:
All-In-One Suites
Miscellaneous Utilities
Photo Editing, Modifing & Organizing
Resize, Rename, Convert
Screen Capture
Viewers
Watermarking
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/graphics.html
Thinking that I will head into Browser category next, most likely to be renamed Web Browsers.
March 1st, a new month:
Graphics is underway. There’s a ton of files here so this category is one of the main reasons we are undertaking this project. If you wanted a simple viewer, you would have had to browse hundreds of files. Not anymore. Now it will be easier to find a screen capture program, all-in-one suites, resizing, renaming & converting, viewers, photo collections and more. Will update with the link when done. I am about 13rd into it.
February 27th, stopped counting the days:
Drivers is done. Game Tweaks is pretty small, so I banged that out as well. Renamed to Gaming. The dream is to maybe add some cool desktop games here someday so that will be more subcategories, hence Gaming. Might never happen. Anyhow, since the console and portable devices came out, the PC gaming tweaks, etc. have dropped off with it. Some pretty cool system tweaks that disable services and those work better than any standalone tweaks. And I didn't spell check this today either so there.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/game_tweaks.html
February 25th, Day 11:
Slowed down a bit the last couple of days but I am going through the Drivers and Driver Tools categories which will be merged into one Drivers section with Driver Related Utilities, Driver Updaters and Specific Drivers. Honestly, the Specific Drivers category is a dead category since all driver updating can now be done with Updaters but we keep some old stuff people still look for there. We stopped adding drivers, for the most part, years ago. It’s a disservice to our readers.
This will take a few days I think. Update: Drivers is merged into new categories. Took a break. Driver Tools will begin merging Thursday and then that category will be deleted.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/drivers.html
February 23rd, Day 10:
I plan to do nothing today but I decided to move the Firewall category under Internet Tools. People don’t download, nor need, standalone firewalls much anymore so there’s no reason to waste a whole top level category for it. there are also quite a few shareware programs there that are no longer in business or not updated in 5+ years that we can't leave them online here. There's not a real lot in this category so I can tackle this in a couple hours and enjoy some of my Sunday.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/firewalls.html
February 22nd, Day 9:
As promised, Drive Cleaners is gone and now is it's own sub-category of Drive Utilities:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/cleaners.html
Only took 7 hours
Time for a day off me thinks.
February 21st, Day 8:
Drive Utilities organized. That took a while!
Tomorrow I begin merging Drive Cleaners category into the Drive Utilities category, which include:
Cleaners
Data Recovery
Defragmentors
File Managers
Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Tools
Partitioning
SSD Tools
USB Tools
Wipe or Format
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/drive_utilities.html
February 20th, Day 8:
Motorcycle ride is over. Who needs a day off? One of the harder categories is underway. Drive Utilities and Drive Cleaners have become huge and will now be split off.
Should make life easier for everyone. When finished the Drive Cleaners category will be deleted for the revamped Drive Utilities.
February 19th, Day 7:
Wow, a week gone by. I removed the Data Recovery category as it is now merged as the first sub-category of Drive Utilities.
Check out the new Data Recovery sub-category:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/data_recovery_233b.html.
Now comes a tough category; Drive Utilities. This will compromise drive cleaners, partitioning, data recovery and who knows?
Thursday I think I will ride my motorcycle, then tackle Drive categories starting Friday. See you soon!
February 18th, Day 6:
Started Covert Ops section today. This is a category we like to have here. It’s geeky. Every program in there will also flag your antivirus program, before flagging everything was cool. Originally, I was going to not sub-category this BUT there’s a lot of programs in here the average user shouldn’t use and it’s also the perfect category to put programs that find hidden passwords under asterisks (*****) as well as product key recovery so they get their own categories. Off we go!
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/covert_ops.html
February 17th, Day 5:
CDDVDBlu-Ray is under way and it's pretty cool. You can narrow what you want by Burning Tools, Ripping and Converting or Utilities.
Done: http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/cddvdblu_ray.html
February 16th, Day 4:
Holy cow, Appearance is done! It took most of my Saturday and 2 hours of today to finish but it’s worth it. You have Icon related (anything icons), Screensavers (always wanted to add more cool screensavers to MG), Shell Enhancement and Replacement (completely change Windows look or just certain aspects only), Start Menu and Taskbar (7 start buttons, Mac looking docks and more) and Themes (usually a package of icons, wallpapers, etc).
My current plan is to not add subcategories to:
Backup: Simply the least popular section on Majorgeeks. Hardly worth the time.
Benchmarking. Not enough files and rarely anything new.
Browsers: We really don’t do much with add-ons but more browsers themselves and some tools. There’s no simple way to break these up.
So, I guess CDDVDBlu-Ray is next.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/appearance.html
February 15th, Day 3:
Started Appearance. There's a ton of files that will be easier in categories, for sure. So far they include Icon Related, Screensavers, Shell Enhancements, Shell Replacements, Start Menu And Taskbar and Themes.
Anti-Virus category is now complete.
I deleted some obsolete shareware and moved some things to malware, where they belong. There's no need to download a shareware antivirus program that has not been updated since 2005, for example.
The categories are similar to AntiMalware: All-In-One Anti-Virus Suites (most people are looking for this), Anti-Virus Definition Updates (most are annoyed by this), Virus Removal, Protection and Repair (again, this category is just niche tools and anything that's not a full featured program) and Symantec Removal Tools. The Symantec tools are all excellent but since Symantec stopped doing these years ago, they are not needed for operating systems like Windows 8. So they are in their own category where techs, or someone with a niche infection, can find them. The typical home user won't know, or need to look in there.
Should finish Anti-Virus today and head to Appearance tomorrow which will be one of those tougher categories.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/anti_virus.html
February 14th, Day 2:
Admin tools is partially sorted. There's a lot of crap in there that may need to be moved to new categories and subcategories so I have to come back to this later:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/admin_tools.html
All In One (Now All In One Tweaks) was not too difficult. Most of these do the same things so basically I moved the older tweaks to one category and newer tweaks to the other and added a category for God Mode files. There's some crossover of files in the older section that support Windows 7, for example, but you're better off downloading newer, supported tools for Windows 7.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/all_in_one.html
Anti-Spyware (Now Anti-Malware) will work like anti-virus with the following categories: All-In-One Anti-Malware Suites, Anti-Malware Definition Updates, Anti-Malware Remove, Protect, Repair and Rootkit Removal
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/anti_spyware.html
BIOS: I tackled this first because it was easy. Cancel that, ended up with 4 categories. go figure. They are Backup and Restore, Delete or Reset, Information and Tweaks and Updaters.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/bios.html
New Category
Finally added a compression category and moved most of what I know is available to that category. These are programs to open zip, iso, rar and more. Odds are we will never need to sub-category this.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/compression.html
Until next time!
Please note that this sort of editing (could require editing over 8,000 pages) will mean there will be mistakes. We are moving files, pages and deleting a lot of old shareware and freeware that simply does not apply and no one should download.
If you find any mistakes please help us by emailing tim@majorgeeks.com

People don’t download, nor need, standalone firewalls much anymore so there’s no reason to waste a whole top level category for it. there are also quite a few shareware programs there that are no longer in business or not updated in 5+ years that we can't leave them online here. There's not a real lot in this category so I can tackle this in a couple hours and enjoy some of my Sunday.

February 22nd, Day 9:
As promised, Drive Cleaners is gone and now is it's own sub-category of Drive Utilities:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/cleaners.html
Only took 7 hours

February 21st, Day 8:
Drive Utilities organized. That took a while!
Tomorrow I begin merging Drive Cleaners category into the Drive Utilities category, which include:
Cleaners
Data Recovery
Defragmentors
File Managers
Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Tools
Partitioning
SSD Tools
USB Tools
Wipe or Format

Off we go!

February 17th, Day 5:
CDDVDBlu-Ray is under way and it's pretty cool. You can narrow what you want by Burning Tools, Ripping and Converting or Utilities.
