In the 14 years+ MajorGeeks has been around a lot has changed. Back then new technology included Windows XP, the iPod, the Toyota Prius and the Segway PT. The Camera phone, YouTube, iTunes and DVR’s were still a few years out.
And most software was free. Some began to run advertising, called Adware, but that didn’t work well nor last long. In the past few years, Bundleware has become the new thing. How long this will last, we don’t know; but it appears to be here to stay for a little while at least.
So, starting today we are taking a large step to help you identify when a program has bundled software. We already make note in the description but people rarely read through the description. We also link to a story called Third party programs and toolbars; what you need to know in bold letters, just like that, in the warning. Yet, to show you how few people read the description, that story has only 18,500 views at the time of this story. To put that into perspective, our top downloaded file every week will be downloaded many more times than that article has been seen.
Freeware and shareware will still be marked as such and this is only going forward as it would take too long to edit every file on the site to reflect this. We hope this gives MajorGeeks a level of transparency you won’t get on other sites, who often also include their own branded Bundleware with the author’s Bundleware all in the name of a few bucks.
We’re not perfect, but we try. If you see a new or updated listing that was not marked as Bundleware, take a minute to email mgnews at majorgeeks and we will fix it right away.
Thanks for your support over the years.
