Microsoft has made no secret that they really want you to try Microsoft Edge. Frankly, we made no secret that we like the new Chromium-based Edge better than Chrome, but changing your default browser isn't always that easy.

Windows 11 continues the Microsoft Edge push by making it harder to change your default web browser, which is counter-intuitive to what's supposed to be the best operating system yet.

One easier solution might be to check the Settings in your web browser to verify that it is the default browser if Edge decides to take over. While that sounds easy enough, read on to see how difficult Microsoft has made this in Windows 11.

Video tutorial:

Click on Start > Settings or press the Windows Key + I.

Click on Apps on the left.

Click on Default apps on the right.

Search for, or find and click on your preferred web browser. For this tutorial, we're using Google Chrome.

You have to change every file association (.htm, .HTML, .pdf, .shtml, etc.) by clicking on the shortcut icon. While that can be time-consuming, you only need to change the default file type for any type that Microsoft Edge has taken over.

A window will pop up to choose your default web browser for that file type. You might also be prompted to switch to Microsoft Edge. Click on Switch anyway if you get that window.

Click on your preferred web browser, then click on OK.
