How to Change the Minimum and Maximum PIN Length in Windows 10 & 11

By Timothy Tibbetts

on 06/15/2023

Windows 10 offers the option to use Hello PIN, a 4 digit number that you can use to log into your computer. By default, your PIN is 4 characters, but you can specify any number you like.

Open Group Policy Editor by pressing the Windows Key + R, type in gpedit.msc, and press Enter.

Windows 10 Home users will need to enable Group Policy Editor.

Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > PIN Complexity.

Look for two entries on the right; Maximum PIN length and Minimum PIN Length.

Double-click the one you want to change. The default setting for both minimum and maximum is 4. You can not specify a number lower than 4 or higher than 127. In most cases, you'll want to change both numbers.

For example, changing both minimum and maximum to 5 would require a 5 digit PIN.

Click on Enabled.

Use the arrows or type in the new number.

Click on OK.
