Ring Video Doorbell Review
By Timothy Tibbetts |
We decided to give the Ring Video doorbell a try while remodeling a home we purchased that never had a doorbell installed.
The packaging is easy to figure out, and the installation was simple. We removed the battery immediately to start charging. The battery can take up to 10 hours to recharge and should last 3-6 months, depending on usage and settings. A small level is included and even an orange Torx screwdriver to easily remove the battery cover.
Once you download the app, setting the Ring up is simple, but can take some time. For example, you need to decide if you want motion or Ring alert. A wizard is provided to set the motion zones, although we found that the motions zones aren't specific enough. You can prolong battery life with video, motions, and sound settings. We found that the Ring needed to be used for about a week before we knew what settings we wanted, or didn't.
You can access Live View anytime and talk to anyone who rings your doorbell. Our success with talk has been good, but that assumes a good connection on your Ring and phone connections. The video is clear and smooth. Nighttime vision is excellent, as well. There's access to event history, and you can snooze motion at any time. You can check the health of your Ring, including battery life. We have a lot of activity at our front door being self-employed, so we're charging the Ring every two months.
Another great feature is the built-in Neighbors app, where people alert you to problems in the neighborhood, including suspicious vehicles, stolen items, and more.
One issue we ran into was getting a cheap plug-in doorbell we purchased working. Because we have multiple smartphones and a small home, we decided to disconnect the old doorbell because we always hear the door ring on our smartphones. The doorbell connection only works one of two ways, so odds are we could have fixed that.
One reason that I'm happy with my purchase is from talking to neighbors who want to add multiple cameras yet are having a hard time picking a product. A neighbor recently purchased his first and returned it and is now back to being undecided.
The Ring is easy to install, and you can add in a Ring floodlight for additional protection. All told, we have no regrets purchasing the Ring doorbell and would repurchase it. We found the battery life acceptable, however, a power adapter is available to plug into a wall.
The Ring can be bought at most electronic retailers and Amazon. As an Amazon Associate, we earn a commission if you purchase an item using our affiliate links.
