Using AeroShake To Clear Your Desktop

By Corporal Punishment

on 04/27/2025

One of the features of Windows 10 / 11 is the ability to use AeroShake to grab an open Window and clear the screen. This means that you can quickly minimize all the other windows on your desktop by shaking the one you want to focus on.

Even though this feature was first introduced in Win7, it's not a tool I really used until recently. Turns out it's wicked handy.

To do this, you need to click and hold the title bar of the window you want to keep and then move your mouse back and forth rapidly. This will make all the other windows disappear, leaving only the one you are holding. (Note: I am disappointed that there is no 'Ta DA' sound effect.) To restore the other windows, you can either shake the window again or click on the taskbar icon of any minimized window. This feature can be useful when you want to declutter your screen and concentrate on a single task.

However, some users may find it annoying to have a twitchy mouse hand and accidentally trigger the effect. Clearly, I do not. : ) If you want to disable this feature, you can follow these steps:

Click on Start > Settings or press the Windows Key + I.
Click on System.
Click on Multitasking on the right.
Check or uncheck Title bar window shake.

You have now disabled the shake to clear feature and you can use your windows as normal.
