Your Windows License Will Expire Soon
By Timothy Tibbetts |
If you've received an error message stating "Your Windows license will expire soon. You need to activate Windows in settings" then here are a few ways to solve this error.
The first thing we need to do is retrieve your product key if you haven't already. For most people, you can open an elevated Command Prompt and type in wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey.

Note here that this will not work in PowerShell. If you could not find your product key, see Retrieve Your Windows and Office Product Keys with These Free Apps.
1: Reset License Status
Open the Command Prompt as admin again and type in slmgr –rearm, reboot and see if the problem is solved.
2: Uninstall and Install Your Product Key
Open the Command Prompt as admin again and type in slmgr.vbs /upk and you should receive a message stating Uninstalled product key successfully.

Now, type in slmgr.vbs /ipk *Your Product Key Here*, reboot and see if the problem is solved.
3: Rebuild Tokens.Dat and Run the Activation Troubleshooter
Normally, we'd suggest running the Windows Activation Troubleshooter, but first, we'd rebuild tokens.dat.
You can find Tokens.Dat at C:WindowsSystem32SPPStore2.0. Rename tokens.dat to tokens.old.
Open Powershell or Command Prompt as admin and type in the following two lines pressing enter after each:
net start sppsvc
cscript.exe slmgr.vbs /rilc
Reboot your computer and go to your Control Panel, Settings, Activation and run the Activation Troubleshooter. Optionally, use the Windows Key + S, begin typing and click on Activation.
4: Call Microsoft Support
If nothing else has worked, a quick phone call to Microsoft Support should do the trick. Because they have numerous phone numbers worldwide, we'd search for the phone number you need.
Hopefully, you found the problem. It should go without saying that we're assuming you have a valid product key, but we've seen people trying to solve this problem unaware they never had a valid product key. Microsoft can tell you that.
