Error 0x000007b, The Application Was Unable to Start up Correctly

Error 0x000007b, The application was unable to start up correctly on Windows 10 is a common error easily explained and fixed once you understand the cause.

The error is often related to the wrong architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) or missing runtime files. Make sure that you have the correct 32-bit or 64-bit version. Also, keep in mind that you can run 32-but on 64-but, but you can't run 64-bit on 32-bit operating systems. If you're not sure, check if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system.

Error 0x000007b - Compatibility Mode

Some software, particularly older software, could return the 0x000007b error.

If you have a shortcut on your Desktop, right-click on the shortcut and select Properties.

Click on the Advanced tab and click Run as Administrator. Click OK.

If you run your program from the Start Menu, then click Start, locate the shortcut, and right-click on the program. Select More, Open file location and locate the executable.

Note: You can also do this for any program you like by finding the executable with File Explorer or Windows Explorer and follow the steps after the screenshot below.

Each executable will have a similar name to the program. For example, we're looking at Firefox in the screenshot, so we know to find and right-click on firefox.exe.

Right-click on the executable and select Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab and select Run this program as Administrator.

Compatibility Mode can be found near the top. Check that box and select what Operating system you want to run your program compatible with. Only Windows 8, 7, and Vista are supported, so choose the operating system your application was written for or use Windows 7 if you're unsure.

Error 0x000007b - .Net Framework

Let's verify that .Net is on. Press the Windows Key + S, begin typing and click on Turn Windows features on or off.

Any versions of the .Net Framework listed should be on. Check the box if it's not.

Error 0x000007b - Visual C++

Visual C++ has been known to cause this error also.

Your first step would be to check Windows Updates. If there isn't an updated version, download the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable Package. The download links provided there download directly from Microsoft, who typically post the runtimes before they appear in Windows Updates.

In a perfect world, the runtimes are backward compatible, but it's not that simple. We've seen numerous problems where older apps require, you guessed it, older runtime files. These runtimes are often named by year, with 2010 redistributable being the most common missing runtime we've seen.

You can download the runtime you need individually from Microsoft or MajorGeeks, but we've fixed our problems using third-party freeware updaters. These updates ensure you have the runtimes you need and include:

  • Visual C++ Runtime Installer (All-In-One)
  • Visual C++ Redistributable Runtimes AIO Repack

    Error 0x000007b - Reinstall the App

    If the error continues and you've made sure the .Net Framework and Visual C++ are updated, you need to uninstall and reinstall the app. There are many applications, including Origin that required these steps.

    Error 0x000007b - Check Drive for Errors

    Close all open programs.

    Open PowerShell as Administrator and type in chkdsk /f /r

    Press Y when prompted.

    Your computer will reboot and try to repair any problems.
