Selected GPT Formatted Disk Partition Is Not of Type PARTITION_BASIC_DATA_GUID
By Timothy Tibbetts |
Windows 10 has made disk partitioning easier, but it's not without a few issues. With that comes this particular, long error message - "The selected GPT formatted disk contains a partition which is not of type PARTITION_BASIC_DATA_GUID and is both preceded and followed by a partition type PARTITION_BASIC_DATA_GUID."
As far as we know, this issue appears for many when extending a partition from a smaller GPT disk to the new MBR. To fix this problem, we need to convert the GUID Partition Table disk to MBR.
1: Use Aomei Partition Assistant
While not free, you can accomplish these tasks using the trial version of Aomei Partition Assistant. Aomei Partition Assistant Standard is a comprehensive disk partition solution, which includes a Partition Manager and a one-click Extend Partition Wizard. It provides powerful and professional features to manage disk partitions.
Download and install AOMEI Partition Assistant, and you will see the status of your hard drives and disk partitions
Right-click on the disk which causing the error and then click on Convert to MBR Disk
Now click OK, Yes and Apply
AOMEI Partition Assistant will make the changes and reboot your computer automatically.
This can also be accomplished using PowerShell or the Command Prompt for advanced users who understand drive and partition numbers. First, we need to open an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell and choose from the two choices below and follow each step.
2: Convert the GPT Disk to MBR Disk
diskpart (Opens Disk Management)
list disk (lists all disks)
select disk # (Enter number of the disk number)
clean (formats)
convert mbr (converts GPT disk into MBR)
exit
You're done.
3: Convert GPT Disk Partition on GPT Disk Volume Into MBR
diskpart (Opens Disk Management)
list disk (lists all disks)
select disk # (Enter number of the disk number)
list partition (Shows all partitions)
select partition # (Enter number of the partition)
clean (formats)
convert mbr (converts MBR to GPT)
exit
You're done.
