What Is the System.sav Folder and Can I Delete It?
By Timothy Tibbetts |
While browsing your hard drive with hidden files and folders enabled, you might have seen a folder called system.sav and wondered what it was and if you can delete it.
System.sav is a folder generated by some OEM computer builders, most likely Hewlett Packard. The folder contains files to recover your system with HP tools. Even if you clean install from an ISO, the folder is still created, although almost empty.

For example, on our clean install of Windows 10, we discovered a folder named util, with the HP logo. Inside that folder, we found HpseuHostLauncher.exe, which we were unable to use, most likely because we had deleted all HP utilities on a clean install.

You might be wondering if you can delete some or all any of the files found in system.sav. That depends on your configuration.
Do you use any of the Hewlett Packard tools or included utilities? If you don't, you should leave the system.sav file and folders alone. You won't be able to use any of the Hewlett Packard recovery tools if you delete the folder. We recommend you leave the folder alone.
If you clean installed Windows 10, then the files can safely be deleted because you're most likely never going to use their tools or utilities. As a test, I removed the system.sav folder and rebooted, and the folder didn't return. If you're not comfortable, leave it alone. The folder uses minimal hard drive space and uses no system resources so that nothing can be gained.
