Bluelife Hosts Editor is a portable, freeware hosts-file editor that allows you to easily add/delete, block, and update domain names to your hosts file.

All you need to do is type the hostname you wish to add and use the "Resolve domain name and add into the list button.

When you enter a domain name that you want to access in your web browser, your application begins a process of translating that name into an IP address. This conversion is essential for establishing a connection to the desired site. The process of transforming hostnames into their corresponding IP addresses is known as Domain Name Resolution.

Most domain name resolutions to IP addresses are accomplished through the Domain Name System (DNS), which serves as the standard resolution service across various operating systems, including Apple, Linux, Unix, Netware, and Windows. DNS facilitates this process by translating user-friendly domain names, like www.example.com, into numerical IP addresses, such as 192.0.2.1, which computers use to identify each other on the network.

However, an alternative method exists for resolving domain names without relying on the DNS infrastructure - this is achieved through the HOSTS file. This text file, present in nearly all operating systems that utilize TCP/IP (the foundational communication protocol for the Internet), serves as a local mapping tool. Users can manually define mappings between domain names and their corresponding IP addresses within the HOSTS file.

Essentially, the HOSTS file functions as an address translator and redirector. When a domain name request is made, the operating system checks the HOSTS file for an associated IP address before querying DNS servers. This can be particularly useful for various purposes, such as testing websites during development, overriding DNS entries, or blocking access to specific sites. By editing the HOSTS file, users can dictate how their system resolves particular domain names, providing a handy workaround in scenarios where DNS might be unavailable or suboptimal.
