Fido is a PowerShell script from the creator of Rufus. It features a simple graphical interface for downloading Windows 11, 10, and 8 retail ISOs. A video tutorial is available.

Fido was created because, although Microsoft does make retail ISO download links freely and publicly available (at least for Windows 8 through Windows 11), until recent releases, most of these links were only accessible after making users go through a lot of unnecessary steps. This created a counterproductive and unfriendly consumer experience, which significantly detracted from what people wanted: direct access to ISO downloads.

Start PowerShell with the Windows Key + X and type in Fido.ps1. Powershell will "close" and present a GUI to continue. Select Windows 11, 10, or Windows 8.1 and click on continue. You now have a dropdown box to select the Windows 10 or 8.1 version you want.

Finally, you can choose from the available editions. Depending on the release you select and availability, these choices can vary from Home to Pro to Education.




Downloading Windows ISOs has been made simple using apps, including Microsoft's own Media Creation Tool. Finding some older builds is much more challenging, and Fido makes it simple. We liked the choice of name for this app as well.

Users who get a restricted error should execute Fido using Get-Content .\Fido.ps1 | powershell.exe -noprofile.
