How to Fix There Was a Problem Resetting Your PC Error on Windows 10

By Timothy Tibbetts

on 06/15/2023

Windows 10 now includes "Reset this PC," which can reinstall Windows 10 without losing all of your personal files or if you want to reset your computer to factory fresh. It works well unless you receive a "There was a problem resetting your PC error on Windows 10" error. Here are the steps you can take to fix this.

1: Boot Into Safe Mode

Safe Mode allows Windows to load without drivers or any unneeded processes and services. Often you'll find that something that's stuck in Windows 10 can be fixed in Safe Mode.

While we're at it, sometimes a reboot of Windows alone will solve the problem. Even a few reboots might do the trick. Crazy, but worth a try if you haven't rebooted.

2: Rename Software and Registry Hives

If you can still get to your Windows 10 Desktop, here are some steps that might resolve the problem. Note: If you can't get to the Desktop, you can tap or hold the F8 key and either boot into safe mode or choose Advanced Options, then Command Prompt.

Open an elevated Command Prompt and change directories to C:\Windows\System32\config. We're going to rename the software and registry hives by typing in the following two lines, pressing enter after each.

Note: If you're only refreshing your PC then only type in the first line. If you're resetting, type in both.

ren system system.001
ren software software.001

3: Disable and Re-Enable the Windows Recovery Environment

Open a Command Prompt and disable, then re-enable the Windows Recovery Environment.

Type in:

reagentc /disable
reagentc /enable
